Arnold Palmer’s Putter and General Kelly’s Hammer (Guests: Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett and Justice Kyra Harris Bolden)

We’re in the home stretch. Pretty soon we can look forward to aa respite from text messages, TV and internet ads and seemingly endless emails begging for cash. But until then:

  • Even as Donald Trump was putting in a grueling 5-minute French fries shift at McDonalds, his former Chief of Staff – 4-star General John Kelly – branded Trump a fascist. Within hours Kamala Harris used the same label to describe him.
  • The polls are all scrambled as we head into the final week of the campaign.
  • The candidates and their surrogates continue their daily barrage of Michigan events. We talk with one of them, Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett.
  • Another prominent Republican has crossed party lines to endorse the Harris/Walz ticket: former Michigan 18-term congressman Fred Upton.
  • Complicating the election process: the world’s richest man is spewing dozens of lies about Michigan’s election integrity, amplified by his personal $44-billion hobby, better known as X-Twitter.
  • There’s much more on the ballot than the high-profile federal races. Also at stake in Michigan, control of the Legislature and the state Supreme Court. We are joined by Michigan Justice Kyra Harris Bolden about her campaign to remain on the ostensibly non-partisan court.

We have two special guests on this week’s pod:

First-term Texas congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, in Michigan campaigning on behalf of the Harris/Walz ticket.

Representative Crockett soared into national prominence when, as a member of the House Oversight Committee, she scored a technical knockout of Marjorie Taylor Greene. It began with MTG Greene saying, unprovoked, to Crockett: “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.” Committee chairman James Comer ruled that this remark did not violate House protocol. To clarify the limits on personal comments, Crockett asked “If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach-blonde, bad-built, butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?”

Her district is based in the Dallas area.

Michigan Supreme Court Justice Kyra Harris Bolden was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court two years ago by Governor Whitmer following the retirement of Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormick. She is now running to complete McCormick’s full term. Prior to her appointment she served two terms in the state House of Representatives where she served as a member of the House Judiciary Committee. A graduate of Southfield Public Schools, Bolden chose to remain in Michigan for her studies, receiving her bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University and law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. Her name appears on the non-partisan ballot.
